The name on a PAN card and the income tax database does not match. What can I do to solve this problem?

Having a difference in name on your PAN card versus the IT department’s database can create issues when filing your returns or completing other tax formalities. Here are the steps you can take –

• First, log in to the income tax e-filing portal using your income tax PAN card. Under the ‘My Profile’ section, check the name according to their records.
• Next, if there is a minor spelling variation, you can directly edit your name in the ‘Personal Details’ section to match your PAN. Make sure you enter the details exactly as in PAN.
• If your name changes significantly due to marriage, etc., you need to apply for a name change in your PAN Only after the PAN database shows your updated name can you change the details in income tax records.
• You can also visit your nearest IT office with original ID/address proofs and submit a form to have the error corrected.
• Lastly, allow some time for databases to sync after each change request. Check back in one week if the issue persists despite taking the above steps.
